Land Rover Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport is fitted with Terrain Response, a low-ratio gearbox and height adjustable air suspension, so can venture into places most rivals fear to tread. Fortunately, as it's an urban SUV intended mainly for on-road use, it doesn't fare badly in handling terms, either. With very light steering, the British off-roader feels vague turning into corners, but once loaded up it grips well and stays level. The Range Rover Sport is responsive to gearbox and brake inputs too. The auto transmission has a good manual mode and the brakes are resistant to fade. However, even on motorways the ride is a touch unsettled and doesn't isolate you from bumps as well as you might expect. But V8 petrol engines provide searing pace, particularly the 4.2-litre Supercharged model. The Jaguar unit burbles beautifully and proves fast. The V6 diesel, also supplied by Jaguar, is slower but just as smooth and refined.

Car development tends to be evolutionary. Rarely do we get big leaps forward. Yet the Range Rover's TDV8 diesel offered exactly that when it was launched. It delivers a 0-60mph time which is four seconds faster than its Td6 predecessor, yet its main strength isn't power. The smoothness and refinement are first-class. The engine never becomes intrusive and suits the car brilliantly, as does the slick six-speed auto. The car's brakes are a weakness though. Brembo may supply them, but they struggle to deal with the TDV8's massive 2,717kg kerbweight, so stopping distances are long and the ABS cuts in too soon. But, with 400Nm on tap from just after tickover, and pulling only 1,900rpm at 70mph, the Range Rover has a relaxed feel that makes even V8 petrol versions also available seem hard-working (though the Supercharged 4.2, sharing an engine with the Jaguar XKR, does provide savage acceleration). This blends perfectly with its road manners. It rides brilliantly, smothering bumps and ironing out imperfections, and even though it can feel ponderous through corners, the Range Rover remains well controlled.

The Land Rover has an immediate trump card - the way it drives. In this respect, it's ahead of every rival. Off-road, with the assistance of its Terrain Response system, it inspires more confidence and has better traction, while it excels on tarmac, too. The Land Rover is the sector's quietest, most comfortable and stable car at speed, and even on rough roads, there are few unwanted vibrations through the sturdy frame. It's not as sporty as, say, a Honda CR-V, but that doesn't matter in an SUV. Rather, the Freelander scores as it covers ground quickly, efficiently and effortlessly - thanks to the excellent suspension and superbly accurate and informative steering. The all-new TD4 diesel gives the class-best a run for their money, too. Developed with Peugeot Citroen, it's the most powerful 'mainstream' engine in its sector, and pulls well from under 1,500rpm. Despite the car's weight, it never needs to be worked hard, and remains smooth, quiet and capable. It's a big step forward form the old unit, as is the chunky shift of the six-speed manual gearbox, and the firm brakes.

The Land Rover, thanks to its air suspension, is accomplished on the road, with a sophisticated feel through corners and an impressive absence of roll. The steering also helps place it with great accuracy and ease. And while there may be a touch of float over longer undulations, the ride is extremely comfortable, wafting over bumps and completely isolating occupants from the road surface. Two Jaguar-derived engines provide impressive running manners, particularly the diesel, but struggle to overcome the Discovery's immense kerbweight. It is a leisurely performer, albeit remarkably refined and all but whisper-quiet in most situations. Off-road, it truly is a go-anywhere vehicle, with electronic gizmos taking car of most situations. The amount of axle articulation with the air suspension is amazing as well.

There really is nothing out there like the Defender, it's crude and has been around forever and yet people still keep buying it. The Armed forces are its biggest fans, so you can be sure the Land Rover's a rugged beast, as you'll soon appreciate if you drive one. Its basic design dates back to a time when ergonomics meant little and in the cabin it really shows - sharp edges, terrible plastics and haphazard controls abound. Despite its generous width you're pushed up against the door too, meaning you have to adopt a unique driving position and explaining why you see so many farmers driving them with their elbow hanging out an open window. The gearshift requires a good shove and the clutch a healthy stamp, while the brakes too need a firm prod. It's certainly a physical drive, giving you a real workout behind the wheel. Manoeuvring requires a fair amount of wheel twirling due to its poor turning circle, but at least visibility is good and it's easy to place with its boxy proportions.
